Prepping for a Family Vacation Session

Prepping for a Family Session is tough…planning outfits and prepping all the little ones often seems like such a tough task that many families put off their sessions far too long!  Prepping for a Family Vacation Session adds another element to the stress level that I experienced for the first time this past Spring.

I have wanted to write this post for a couple months now because I have SO many Family Vacation Sessions each year, but navigating my first trimester of pregnancy for the 4th time wiped me out (I always forget how crazy tired a little human growing inside of you can be)!.

So, to help make your life easier…I wanted to share a few tips to make the planning a little less stressful.  First, you can look at my tips for planning your outfits here…it truly does not have to be as hard as you think and you definitely do not have to buy all brand new outfits!

Second, pack everything for your Family’s Session in its own suitcase (including shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc).  Once you get to your vacation location, hang these items up and keep them apart so that nothing is missing when its time to get dressed for your Session.

Third, trust your photographer on location and weather.  We went to the Outer Banks for our vacation and I honestly knew nothing about the best light, locations, and weather in that location.  I am a professional, yet, I was not on my turf.  Amanda knew exactly what to plan and expect and was so flexible when we put off our session for a day because the weather became cold and rainy during our planned time.  You do not want someone that overbooks their schedule and does not have time to work around weather events that are out of everyone’s control!

Fourth, make it fun!  This is your vacation…relax and realize that kids are kids.  Bring bubbles, let them get in the water, get dirty…it is OK!!

So…here are a few favorites from our Session!  I think they turned out great and because it was my 40th Birthday as well…I dressed up a bit for a few of me and hubby alone too!

Oh…and one other thing I want to mention…my hubby said that we did not have one picture from this Session where everyone was looking at the camera and smiling…and guess what…that happens in photo sessions at times…but, we have a lot of laughing and smiling going on and I feel the love and fun that we experienced each time I look at these pics!  Just realize…not every session will be perfect…but, look for the beauty in the imperfect!!  It’s there!!!  To have 5 kids in a sandy environment that was super windy and noisy due to the ocean and nature of a beach session…I think these are great!
